Essential Nutrients: Zinc

Do you have enough zinc? With zinc deficiency being one of the most common mineral deficiencies, the answer might be… maybe not. Considering it’s involvement in over 300 processes in the body, zinc is an important mineral to have!

Zinc is found most abundantly in oysters and meat, so if you follow a vegetarian diet you are most likely low in zinc (nuts and beans contain a small amount, but you would need to consume a LOT to get your RDA of zinc).

Symptoms of low zinc include:

  • infertility
  • low sperm count
  • poor immunity & wound healing
  • thyroid issues
  • poor sense of smell and taste
  • thin or brittle hair
  • white spots on your fingernails
  • low sex drive
  • leaky gut symptoms
  • skin issues
  • allergies
  • anxiety/depression

You can check your zinc status with a simple blood test, which you can order with us or through your GP – ask your practitioner at your next appointment if zinc deficiency might be playing a role in your symptoms.

In Chinese Medicine, zinc is an important Qi and Kidney tonic, making it important for fertility, hormonal health, adrenal health, energy, sleep and more.
